Seafarers Medical Examination by Jabatan Laut Malaysia
Seafarers Medical Examination by Jabatan Laut Malaysia
To maintain safety standards, the Jabatan Laut Malaysia (Marine Department of Malaysia) mandates that all seafarers undergo a comprehensive medical examination to ensure their fitness for maritime duties.
At Awam Clinic Station Street Klang, we provide certified seafarers’ medical examinations that comply with the regulations set forth by Jabatan Laut Malaysia. Our team of qualified medical professionals ensures that seafarers meet the health standards necessary to work in the maritime industry, both for domestic and international voyages.
- Comprehensive Medical History
The examination begins with a detailed review of the seafarer’s medical history. This includes inquiries about previous surgeries, injuries, illnesses, chronic conditions, and any medications the individual is currently taking. A thorough understanding of the seafarer’s health background helps identify any pre-existing conditions that may affect their fitness for duty.
- Physical Examination
A complete physical examination is conducted to assess the general health of the seafarer. This includes:
- Height and Weight Measurements: Assessing the Body Mass Index (BMI) to ensure a healthy weight range.
- Cardiovascular System: Examination of the heart and blood pressure to detect any signs of cardiovascular disease, which could impact the seafarer’s ability to perform demanding tasks.
- Musculoskeletal System: An evaluation of strength, flexibility, and mobility, ensuring the seafarer can manage physically demanding tasks like lifting, pulling, and moving equipment.
- Abdominal Examination: To rule out any issues such as hernias or abnormalities in the digestive system that may impair work performance.
- Vision Test
Clear vision is critical for many seafaring tasks, such as navigation, reading instruments, and spotting potential hazards. The seafarer’s medical exam includes:
- Visual Acuity Test: To ensure the seafarer has good near and distance vision.
- Colour Vision Test: Since seafarers need to distinguish between different signal lights and markings, this test ensures the individual can accurately perceive colours, particularly red, green, and white.
- Hearing Test (Audiometry)
Good hearing is essential for understanding verbal instructions and reacting to alarms and emergency signals. The hearing test ensures the seafarer’s auditory capabilities are within acceptable ranges to perform their duties safely.
- Lung Function Test (Spirometry)
A spirometry test measures lung capacity and function to ensure that the seafarer can handle physically demanding tasks without compromising their respiratory health. This is especially important for seafarers working in confined spaces or environments with variable air quality.
- Blood and Urine Test
A blood and urine test is conducted to check for underlying health issues such as diabetes or kidney disease.
- Mental Health and Cognitive Function Assessment
Mental health and cognitive ability are crucial for seafarers who may face long periods of isolation and stressful situations.
- Drug and Alcohol Screening
Some companies may require drug and alcohol testing as part of the seafarers’ medical examination.
Certification Process and Validity
Upon successful completion of the seafarers’ medical examination, the seafarer will receive a Certificate of Medical Fitness issued by Jabatan Laut Malaysia. This certificate is valid for two years for seafarers under the age of 55. For those over 55, the certificate is typically valid for one year. The validity of the certificate ensures that seafarers maintain ongoing fitness for duty, reducing the risk of health-related issues during their time at sea.
Seafarers must renew their medical certificates before the expiration date to continue working on board vessels.
